Fifteen Minutes For Our Future

Our “15 Minutes For Our Future!” initiative is back, and we will continue our fight to protect our democracy, our climate, and our future!
In the months leading up to the 2024 election, we formed a fruitful partnership between our Third Act working groups in blue states and those in battleground states. Now, as we face great threats to our democracy and our climate, Third Act Working Groups from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermont have joined forces once again to resist actions deployed by the new administration and to support democracy and climate advocates. We invite all Third Act members to participate.
We hold a weekly Zoom call – Mondays @ 9AM – to identify actions that each of us can take in the upcoming week to protect democracy and fight the ongoing coup.

- Medicaid is a key source of coverage for some populations
- Medicaid coverage facilitates access to care, improves health outcomes and provides financial protection from medical debt.
PLEASE WATCH: https://chopwoodcarrywaterdailyactions.substack.com/p/scott-dworkin-and-jessica-craven (if you are short on time watch from the 3:50 mark to 12:30 – less than 10 mins) Learn about cruel Medicaid cuts contained in the GOP budget which will benefit the top .1% of our citizens.
Constituents who called their Republican representatives last week to complain about proposed cuts to Medicaid received the same canned response, almost verbatim, from every staffer: “Republicans are not cutting Medicaid. You’ve been misinformed. Medicaid cuts are not a line item in the resolution.”
Here is a video explaining exactly why this is BS and how folks should respond.
The New York Times published a great breakdown of why Medicaid cuts are basically inevitable under Republicans’ budget resolution to benefit the very wealthy.
Script – Please call your Representative today!
My name is [NAME] and I live in [Town/City], [State]. (Feel free to include 1-2 sentences sharing your family/life/work experience along with anything personal relevant to your Medicaid concern].
I’m calling because I know that Congressional leaders are currently negotiating the budget resolution, and I am worried about reports of deep cuts to Medicaid. I’m scared for the thousands of people in our country who stand to lose coverage if these cuts are implemented. These cuts are cruel and will have devastating consequences for the individuals and families who need care most. A vote in favor of them is not a vote for your constituents, it is a vote for billionaire tax cuts.
Medicaid allows children, seniors, people with disabilities, pregnant people, and adults with low incomes to get the health care they need. Nationally it provides health coverage for 36.8 million children, 60% of seniors in nursing homes, and 41% of births. It is a consistently popular program that helps local and state economies by keeping rural hospitals open, supporting job growth, and ultimately saving taxpayer dollars. Thank you for taking this call seriously and for acting to protect Medicaid and other vital programs from unnecessary cuts to support tax cuts for the very wealthy.
Upcoming Actions/Events/Boycotts
Community Reading Event (Sponsored by TA Massachusetts, TA Pennsylvania, and TA Vermont)
David Pepper will be joining us for a discussion of his book Saving Democracy: A User’s Manual for Every American. The online event will take place on April 7 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. EST. Zoom link to follow.
We hope to use Pepper’s book as a guide for our actions during this fraught time. From the book blurb: “It’s a user’s manual, intended to spur action. Your action. After a quick review of the true battle for democracy, each chapter explains how YOU, the reader, can and must play the leading role in strengthening democracy. It details the concrete steps individuals and groups can take where you live, lists resources that can help along the way, and offers case studies and best practices that have worked elsewhere.”
