Advocate for forest management policies that maximize rates of carbon sequestration and carbon storage.

Positive Effect on the Climate Crisis
Preserving forests that naturally sequester and store carbon reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Goals

Inform Vermonters that forests naturally sequester and store carbon, and that current forest management policies need to be revised to maximize the amount of CO2 forests can both remove and store from the atmosphere.

Tasks

  • Review available scientific literature on forest carbon sequestration and storage, and discuss with experts as needed, to gain a thorough understanding of key issues.
  • Obtain currently available fact sheets and FAQs about forest carbon sequestration and storage, and consolidate for distribution to TA VT members and post on our website.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with allies to advocate for improved forest management policies that take into account the capacity of forests to sequester and store carbon.
  • TA VT members advocate for preservation of old and mature forests, in Vermont, New England, and across the U.S.
  • Telephone Gap (Vermont)
    1. Distribute available information about the USFS proposed rule to log the Telephone Gap area, and why the logging will add to the climate crisis.
    2. Learn who supports the proposed rule, and why; and who does not support the proposed rule, and why.
    3. Learn what activities our allies are involved with, and how we can support them and get involved. For example: Call US Congressional Delegation; write letters to the editor; join rallies and protests.
